Fundamentals of electronic measurements

Product(s) used: 9171

Serving in the United States Marine Corps as a calibration technician has left me with the memories of many metrology problem solving moments. From the start we were trained on simple items such as the 77BN and the 189 Multimeter. The challenge came from learning the fundamentals of electronic measurements while simultaneously learning to operate a new piece of equipment.

The skills acquired at this early stage would be necessary when the operation of even more intricate equipment was what the mission called for, to include testing the accuracy of the very equipment I trained on with the Fluke 5520 Calibrator. Day in and day out I would examine the shelves of our calibration shop and without failure I would see the unmistakable yellow of Fluke products awaiting the technician to simply pick them up and carry on with the mission.

I have since then moved on to become an instructor for our job field and it should go without saying that the product used to bring new Marines into the fold is often a Fluke. Sometimes the problem is using the 199C to identify bad components in another piece of test equipment. Other times the problem could be teaching a student the proper use of a 9171 Metrology Well to precisely verify a bi-metallic thermometer’s measurements. At the end of the day Fluke stands out as the most recognizable brand in my field and has become an integral part of my metrology problem solving in the Marines.
